Scope, Timeline, and Resources

This triangle represents the core trade-offs in any project. You’ve likely heard the phrase: “You can pick two, but you can’t have all three.” It’s true—these three elements form a delicate balance.
Scope: What will be done? Scope defines the project’s size, goals, and deliverables. Expanding scope increases complexity and often demands more time or resources.
Timeline: When will it be done? Deadlines drive urgency but come with constraints. Shorter timelines may compromise scope or demand additional resources.
Resources: What’s available to get it done? Resources include budget, people, and tools. Limited resources require sacrifices in scope or timeline.
The triangle teaches us a simple truth: you can’t maximize all three simultaneously. Prioritize two, and the third must flex. Understanding this balance helps manage expectations, allocate effort, and deliver successful outcomes.
So true about projects. Pick two, but you can't have all three at the same time!
